SUKMA - A BURDEN NOW?

When the first Malaysian Games was introduced in 1986, the whole intention was noble. That is to have a multi sporys event that will help state sports bodies get assistance from their respective state government so as to enable to sport to be continued in providing athletes of national material.

When it started growing in the years to come, it shifted into a giant affair with milluons being pumped in to emerge champions, so much so that athlete pinching became a norm and the developmental aspects shunned.

And suddenly someone had this bright idea, that Sukma should be held every year with the National Sports Council having the host job in odd years.

And the NSC oftened frowned at the audacious spending when states organised it thus promising to keep it small in terms of budgeting.

Did they succeed in their so called noble intention and does this odd year Sukma actually serve a purpose?

On both accounts the answer is a big NO. It does not focus on sports that can deliver nation medals such as the Asiad or Olympics but rather dwells on lesser sports which should not be NSC's domain but rather sports for all.

It is the financial aspect that is most worrying as it was reported today that NSC had to fork out RM8 million and could only raise RM1 million for this years edition of Sukma.

This is a major concern and the Sports Minister needs to have a complete relook at the funding of his Ministry.

Why spend a whopping RM15 million in the Tour de Langkawi?  Another few millions in the Monsoon Cup? And there are many multi million ringgit events that will be endless if it were to be listed.

Acceptance of the fact that NSC has erred in making the decision to hold Sukma yearly will be a major step but expecting that will be akin to raising the Titanic.

But hope and accountability is what we have and pray for.

MHC NOMINATION UNDER INVESTIGATION

The Malaysian Hockey Confederation is said to have launched an investigation as to why it had nominated someone not associated with the sport for a vice president position in the forthcoming Olympic Council of Malaysia elections.

Despite being asked several times, MHC Secretary General Johari Abdul Aziz refused to divulge as to why they had nominated the said official and questions posed to other elected members of the MHC drew bewilderment as no one was aware that such a nomination was sent.

Thus this issue is now expected to be raised at the MHC Management Committee meeting on June 30 as no meetings of MHC has been held since March 23, the last Council meeting.

Johari confirmed that they had nominated the said personality but did not want to divulge information as to how the decision was derived but made it clear that he had not received an instruction from the MHC President Tengku Abdullah Sultan Ahmad Shah.

GOVERNMENT INTERVENTION IN OCM ELECTIONS?

It was only something that many had alleged over the past two weeks or so. But of late more evidence is surfacing on this alleged government interference, or rather one top civil servant, interfering with the elections of the Olympic Council of Malaysia.

And if the evidence is forwarded to the International Olympic Committee, it will have dire consequences on Malaysian Sports.

At least one national body has confirmed that its official received instructions from the top civil servant to submit a nomination for a particular candidate. And the nomination was duly submitted without the national body holding any meetings at its council to deliberate on the nomination.

This could probably be the tip of the iceberg. Just how many others were coerced into making the nominations is left to be seen.

More later as we strive to bring you the truth despite cyber troopers aligned to top civil servants attacking this blogger in veiled threats of late.

ONE DOWN, HOW MANY MORE

After having snubbed Badminton Association of Malaysia and spoken out against decisions taken by the Football Association of Malaysia,  Sports Minister Khairy Jamaluddin made what is perhaps the decision that has been anticipated by many - having a new KSU at the helm at the Ministry of Youth and Sports as reported by Bernama earlier today.

The replacement will bring joy to many but therr will also be those who will frown at the decision taken as the former KSU has worked his way up and now will be placed at the JPA.

Next the focus will be in the Sports Commissioner and it is clear that the former KSU will not be placed there since he will be placed back into the pool at JPA awaiting his next assignment.

Which brings us to the question on just who will assume the post at the Sports Commissioner Office.

There is talk that Dato Jalil Abdullah, a senior director at NSC could move there since his relationship with the current DG is rather strained.

But there has also been some talk among the grapevines that former National Sports Institute Director General Dato Dr. Ramlan Azuz could be reinstated.

Should that happen then the current NSI DG Ahmad Shapawi Ismail could take a short walk across to the SC office.

Khairy has been keeping his cards close to his chest on making changes but knowing him, Khairy speaks as he thinks,  and he is not one to hold back words.

While other Ministers take time to settle down, Khairy had got down to work, not even concerned that some minnows make more statement on sports of late.
